About the opportunity

Do you thrive in the pursuit of ensuring excellence in environmental consulting services for your clients? SWCA Environmental Consultants is expanding their team and looking for Authorized Mojave Desert Tortoise field biologists to conduct field surveys and construction monitoring in the Mojave Desert.

 

This role is primarily a field position that may require short-term travel away from home, but will also include office tasks such as data analysis and report preparation.  

What you will accomplish

A key aspect of this position will be coordination and completion of biological field surveys. At times, responsibility acting as a field crew leader supervising field staff and interacting with clients in the field. It is anticipated that moderate travel will be required for the position, with field days averaging 10 to 12 hours; often times in inclement weather.  

  • Monitor project areas during construction or other activities that could be destructive to habitat or potentially hazardous to endangered or threatened species
  • Take initiative and resolve issues to assure client needs are met effectively
  • Maintain high-quality field data and enter information into a database for later interpretation
  • Use topographic maps, aerial photographs, GPS units, and other maps and tools during fieldwork
  • Photograph appropriate habitat, species, and landforms, and collection and other procedures

Experience and qualifications for success

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in biology, botany, ecology, natural resource management, zoology environmental science or a related field required
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in biological surveys
  • Previous U.S. Fish and Wildlife approval as an Authorized Mojave Desert Tortoise Biologist is required; Diverse experience with desert southwest plants and wildlife is preferred
  • Must be able to complete the desert tortoise authorized biologist form showing at least 480 hours of tortoise monitoring experience: Authorized Biologist Request Form
  • California Department of Fish and Game Desert Tortoise Scientific Collecting Permit highly preferred
  • Ability to record complete and accurate data
  • Ability to conduct fieldwork for long hours, in sometimes inclement weather conditions, including walking at least 10-miles in rugged terrain, and be able to carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 20 pounds
