About the opportunity

SWCA Environmental Consultants is seeking a Cultural Resources Field Director in Portland, Oregon. This is a temporary, on-call, hourly position reporting to the Portland office’s senior cultural resource staff. This position is primarily a field position, and requires an archaeologist who is comfortable working alone and supervising small crews. The successful candidate must meet the Secretary of the Interior’s professional qualifications standards in archaeology.

What you will accomplish

  • Oversee and/or perform aspects of field research, data collection, inventory, and analyses, with support from an SWCA project manager.
  • Supervise, direct, and instruct field and lab personnel as needed.
  • Conduct pre-field preparation including gear, accommodation, and transportation logistics.
  • Act with commitment to the Portland office’s core values of integrity, teamwork, and communication.

Experience and qualifications for success

  • A Master’s Degree or higher in archaeology, anthropology or a related field is required
  • Approval as an Oregon-SHPO Qualified Archaeologist, or ability to be approved as such, is preferred
  • Minimum of two (2) years’ experience with a range of field methodologies, including survey, testing, excavation, and monitoring, is required
  • Human osteology experience preferred
  • Regional experience in Oregon
  • Demonstrated leadership ability
  • Ability to work independently as well as supervise small or large field crews
  • Ability to be listed on federal and state cultural resource permits
  • Experience using a Trimble GPS unit with TerraSync
  • Experience with or ability to quickly learn advanced archaeological technologies such as tablet computer applications, databases, drones, and remote sensing imagery
  • Must be able to travel and be able to conduct fieldwork for long hours, in sometimes inclement weather conditions, including walking up to 10 miles per day, often in rugged terrain, and be able to carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 40 pounds
  • Excellent writing skills and ability to record accurate field notes
  • Ability to take initiative, resolve problems, and ensure that tasks are completed in the most effective manner
  • Flexibility and willingness to learn company procedures, and ability to try new, improved techniques
