SWCA Environmental Consultants is expanding their team and looking for individuals who are following their passion in delivering the highest-quality project work.


The successful candidate will conduct field surveys in support of natural resources projects, working under the supervision of Field Directors and/or Project Managers. Project work may include oil and gas development, transmission/pipelines, wind/alternative energy development, transportation, mining, and federal clients. This position will be based out of our Carlsbad, NM office and will be a part of our Albuquerque, NM operations. Your work schedule will be flexible and responsive to changing project needs. Your work will primarily be fieldwork-based and travel will occasionally be required.

What you will accomplish

  • Conduct environmental inspections, wildlife and vegetation baseline studies, and biological evaluations and assessments. 
  • Collect field data, including identification of fauna and flora. Use topographic maps, aerial photographs, GPS units, and other maps and tools to determine exact locations of project areas, habitat types, and associated landforms.
  • Photograph and record appropriate habitat, species, and landforms.
  • Assist with report writing and production of documents, such as biological survey reports, data entry, impact assessments. Assist in Endangered Species Act, wetland delineations and/or Clean Water Act permitting. Operate SWCA vehicles safely.

Experience and qualifications for success

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in biology, botany, environmental science, natural resource management, or other related field required.
  • Knowledge of the fauna and flora of southwestern United States and experience in SE New Mexico/west Texas preferred.
  • Knowledge of threatened, endangered, or special status species in SE New Mexico/west Texas preferred.
  • Vegetation survey, wildlife surveys, measurement experience, or wetland delineation experience required. Prefer wetland delineation and permitting certification.
  • Prior experience with GIS software (ArcPad) and Trimble GPS units and ability to use technology for data collection preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team-based work environment.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel. 
  • Ability to drive a 4-wheel-drive vehicle on rugged, back-country roads.
