  • About the opportunity

    SWCA Environmental Consultants is seeking a Director to lead the environmental services, business and client development, team building, and operational management of our growing Chicago area office, which is situated in Lombard, Illinois, a western suburb of Chicago. The selected candidate will report to the Midwest/Northeast Region Principal and be responsible for leading the office staff, office sales, expanding our client base and market services, and working with the Principal to meet financial goals.


    The individual will also expand SWCA's professional reputation in environmental planning and natural and cultural resource consulting by providing assistance on projects in his/her area of expertise. The position is a regular, full-time, salaried position with salary based on individual qualifications and experience.


    The Chicago office is a part of SWCA’s Midwest/Northeast Region, one the company’s fastest growing regions. This position offers a great opportunity for team leadership as well as business and professional development in this expanding market.

    What you will accomplish

    • Lead and motivate an interdisciplinary team of managers, scientists, and technical specialists; mentor/develop employees; conduct performance reviews.
    • Secure new business and sales.
    • Direct the team in business development and proposal efforts in support of the Region’s business development goals and objectives.
    • Engage in and lead client management and development initiatives.
    • Manage and contribute to key client projects.
    • Work closely with the Principal to manage office financial performance, including performance metrics, revenue, and expenditures.
    • Ensure high technical quality of reports, other deliverables, and overall project execution through the implementation of quality assurance and control procedures.
    • Coordinate with project managers and allocate company resources, including personnel, vehicles, supplies, and equipment
    • Assist with employee compensation planning and the annual business plan process.
    • Maintain a collaborative work environment between SWCA offices, staff, subcontractors, and clients.

    Experience and qualifications for success

    • A minimum of a Bachelor’ degree in environmental planning, science, archaeology, biology, or a related field required; Master’s degree preferred.
    • Minimum of seven (7) years of increasing responsibility in natural or cultural resource project management, planning, science, or a related field.
    • Working knowledge of markets and regulations and experience in natural and/or cultural resources within the Midwest, including in Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, and Michigan. Experience in adjacent states a plus.
    • Proven success of leading a team of environmental professionals.
    • Demonstrated knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations pertaining to environmental, natural and/or cultural resources, such as National Environmental Policy Act, the Clean Water Act, and the National Historic Preservation Act.
    • Demonstrated experience in developing new business and leading major proposal efforts.
    • Good understanding of financial principles, business plans, and implementation.
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
    • Proven experience with high-level agency consultation.
