About the opportunity

SWCA Environmental Consultants is seeking a talented Principal to join our expanding Operations in Utah and Pacific Northwest. The Principal is responsible for providing leadership and management to the Salt Lake City and Portland/PNW operations and all related programs. The successful candidate will provide the leadership, financial management, strategic direction, business and client development, staff management, scientific and technical quality, and organizational alignment with SWCA goals and objectives. The Principal will report to the regional senior management.

The selected individual will be an experienced leader in the industry and will have established positive business relationships in the Intermountain and Pacific Northwest area markets.

What you will accomplish

  • Provide strong leadership and build successful teams with-in and across both offices
  • Partner with the regional Sr. Principal and/or COO to set the strategy for the office and contribute to the regional strategy.
  • As an SWCA leader you will be expected provide leadership to increase the business operations and revenue plans for the offices.
  • Oversee developing and executing on new business and market growth opportunities.
  • Insure technical quality of our services and deliverables to clients.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in project management and effective delegation and oversight of all program goals.
  • Drive successfully meeting financial goals as set during business planning.
  • Have a proven client network which is supported by a proven reputation for providing highest quality service to clients.
  • Contribute to fostering a collaborative team environment that contributes to successful projects and successful team members in the local offices and with other SWCA offices as part of OneSWCA.
  • Experience managing a diverse team of professionals – recruit, mentor, develop, and retain key team players.
  • Promote ownership and drive a employee ownership culture.

Experience and qualifications for success

  • Master’s degree or above in a field related to the environmental services that SWCA generally provides, including (but not limited to) the disciplines of biology, archaeology, anthropology, planning, environmental regulatory compliance, GIS, hydrology, and other environmental and planning fields, and/or a Master’s degree in Business Administration with an emphasis on strategic planning and operations management is strongly preferred.  Bachelor’s degree and demonstrated equivalent experience will be considered.
  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience providing environmental consulting services and/or management of professional services operations, with increasing responsibility, including leadership of others and management level accountability for a professional services business unit or program.
  • Outstanding management and leadership skills that reflect an ability to successfully grow and manage an office including the development and successful implementation of business strategies and plans in support of SWCA’s strategic plan as well as development and management of professional staff.
  • Strategic perspective and solid business acumen in consulting/professional services.
  • Ability to successfully oversee or manage large projects as project or contract manager.
  • Highly developed communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively across state and regional physical boundaries with internal staff and clients.
  • An excellent working understanding of the types of services that SWCA provides and the ability to successfully market SWCA’s services to existing and prospective clients.
  • Commitment to process improvement protocols and quality assurance and quality control.
  • Dedication to scientific integrity and quality work products for all clientele.
  • Ability to oversee proposal and marketing coordination and management of key proposal and marketing efforts.
  • Demonstrated ability and commitment to meet clients’ needs effectively, creatively, and ethically.
  • Commitment to the Mission, Vision, and Values of SWCA.
  • Ability to travel as needed. Travel is estimated to be required 20% of the time.
