About the opportunity

SWCA Environmental Consultants is seeking a Wetland Scientist for our Portland, Oregon office.  As a member of our Natural Resources and NEPA team, you will conduct wetlands fieldwork, reporting, and permitting, as well as associated natural resources related tasks.



What you will accomplish

  • Conducting all aspects of wetland projects including: wetland and waters determination, delineation, permitting, mitigation planning and design, and monitoring
  • Preparing written documents, including wetland and waters determination and delineation reports
  • Preparing wetland removal/fill permit applications
  • Managing projects
  • Coordinating agency review of wetland permit applications
  • Assisting with proposal preparation
  • Collecting field data and writing reports for natural resource assessments
  • Assessing Vegetated Corridors under Clean Water Services and Water Environment Services regulations
  • Preparing resource assessments under local natural resource overlay district ordinances
  • Commitment to the Portland office’s core values of integrity, teamwork, and communication

Experience and qualifications for success

  • A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in a biological science or closely related field
  • A minimum of three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in fieldwork and report preparation in consulting or similar work environment
  • Project management experience
  • Working knowledge of Clean Water Act Section 404 Army Corps of Engineers’ regulation program, Oregon Removal/Fill Law, and/or Washington’s Joint Aquatic Resource Permit Application (JARPA) process
  • Working knowledge of the Army Corps of Engineers Wetlands Delineation Manual (Environmental Laboratory, 1987), and the Western Mountains, Valleys, and Coast Regional Supplement and/or Arid West Regional Supplement, and field experience with describing soils in the field, Pacific Northwest flora, and wetland hydrology indicators
  • Professional Wetland Scientist (PWS) certification obtained through the Society of Wetland Scientist’s Professional Certification Program preferred, or qualified and willing to become certified
  • Supplementary experience in other areas of natural resources consulting such as wildlife surveys, botany surveys, and National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) document preparation is beneficial
  • Excellent oral, written, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to travel as needed for projects throughout Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and Alaska including overnight travel for up to one week at a time on a regular basis
