SWCA Environmental Consultants is expanding their team and looking for dynamic individuals who are new to the environmental field and looking for an opportunity to follow their passion in delivering the highest-quality project work.


Our Austin, Texas office offers a unique work environment and specializes in a wide variety of geological, ecological, and cultural resource studies.  Your role will be assisting experienced field staff to conduct:

  • avian point counts and nest searches
  • endangered and invasive species surveys
  • karst and cave surveys
  • aquifer, surface water, and storm water analyses
  • habitat conservation plan studies
  • wetland delineations and other ecological studies

This is a temporary hourly position, where employment will be based on project availability and requirements.  As such, we are seeking someone with flexibility in their schedule and ability to travel for up to a week or more at a time.  Some projects may require occasional work on nights and weekends.  Most work will be performed in Central Texas, West Texas, or the Texas panhandle, with occasional projects occurring out of the state.

What you will accomplish

You will gain great work experience from several experts in the fields of South-Central Texas karst geology, endangered species, water analyses and habitat conservation.  You will assist biological and data collection studies for natural resource field surveys; including but not limited to karst feature identification, cave exploration and mapping, threatened and endangered species habitat assessments, vegetation surveys, migratory bird or avian surveys, and wildlife assessments. You will learn to read maps and aerial photographs, work on technical reports and scientific studies.  You will also record data using Global Positioning System (GPS) units, tablets, photographs and digital field site forms.

Experience and qualifications for success

  • • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Botany, Ecology, Environmental Science, Geoscience, Natural Resource Management, or a related field [required]
    • Experience in wildlife or environmental fieldwork [preferred]
    • Coursework or experience related to geology, endangered species, plant taxonomy and field botany [preferred]
    • Field work experience in plant surveys [preferred]
    • Knowledge of the general ecology of Central or South Texas [preferred]
    • Knowledge of survey techniques [preferred]
    • Ability to record accurate field notes and research and prepare technical documents [required]
    • Current valid driver’s license [required]
    • Must be able to conduct fieldwork for long hours, in sometimes severe weather conditions, including walking at least 10 miles in rugged terrain, and be able to carry equipment and supplies weighing greater than 40 pounds
