  • About the opportunity

    SWCA Environmental Consultants is seeking a Field Biologist to join the Albuquerque, NM office.  The successful candidate will conduct field surveys in support of natural resources projects, working under the supervision of Field Directors and/or Project Managers. Project work may include oil and gas development, transmission lines, wind/alternative energy development, transportation, mining, and federal clients. 

     

    Your work schedule will be flexible and responsive to changing project needs. Your work will primarily be fieldwork-based and overnight travel will be required.

     

     

     

    What you will accomplish

    • Conduct environmental inspections, wildlife and vegetation baseline studies, biological evaluations and assessments, and threatened/endangered species surveys. 
    • Collect field data, including identification of fauna and flora. Use topographic maps, aerial photographs, GPS units, and other maps and tools to determine exact locations of project areas, habitat types, and associated landforms.
    • Photograph and record appropriate habitat, species, and landforms.
    • Assist with report writing and production of documents, such as biological survey reports, data entry, impact assessments.
    • Assist in Endangered Species Act, wetland delineations and/or Clean Water Act permitting. Operate SWCA vehicles safely.
    • You should be experienced driving 4-wheel-drive vehicle on rugged, back-country roads.

    Experience and qualifications for success

    • Minimum of B.A. or B.S. in Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, Natural Resource Management preferred.
    • Knowledge of the fauna and flora of southwestern United States required, experience in SE New Mexico/west Texas preferred .
    • Knowledge of threatened, endangered, or special status species in SE New Mexico/west Texas preferred.
    • Ability to identify western raptors, including eagles and other avian species.
    • Experience working with Mexican Spotted Owl and Northern Goshawk is preferred.
    • Ability to conduct fieldwork safely for long hours in inclement weather (including temperature extremes) and environmental conditions. Ability to walk up to 10 miles per day, often in rugged terrain. May have to carry equipment and/or supplies weighing up to 40 pounds.
    • Vegetation survey, wildlife surveys, measurement experience, or wetland delineation experience required. Prefer wetland delineation and permitting certification.
    • Prior experience with GIS software (ArcPad) and Trimble GPS units and ability to use technology for data collection preferred.
    • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
    • Familiarity with Microsoft Office Word and Excel.
    • Must have a clean driving record and pass a background check.
