  • About the opportunity

    Historic bldg in water_croppedSWCA Environmental Consultants is seeking an Assistant Architectural Historian within our Cultural Resources Program for our Pasadena, California office. Under supervision of the Architectural History Team Lead, an Assistant Architectural Historian performs a variety of office and field tasks. Work will occur in Southern California. Candidates with experience in California are strongly encouraged to apply.


    The position is temporary and hourly and workload will vary from 12-40 hours a week, depending on workload. Some projects include overtime hours or prevailing wage rates. When project travel is required, per diem, hotel room accommodations, and field vehicles are provided. Project travel time is paid. Pay rate will be based on individual qualifications and experience.


    What you will accomplish

    • Conduct field surveys and perform historic research
    • Prepare historic documentation, including, but not limited to, California Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) 523 Series forms
    • Assist in preparation of technical reports and historic evaluations

    Experience and qualifications for success

    • Bachelor’s degree in History, Architectural History, or a closely related field required; Master’s degree strongly preferred
    • Experience preparing California DPR forms and conducting historic research and surveys
    • Familiarity with cultural resource laws, including NEPA, Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act and CEQA
    • Strong research, writing, and communication skills. Enthusiasm and eagerness to learn.
    • Six months experience working in California cultural resource management as an assistant architectural historian or similar preferred
