  • About the opportunity

    SWCA Environmental Consultants is actively seeking a Field Biologist with strong skills in bat biology, threatened and endangered species compliance, avian surveys, and wetland delineations to join our growing Austin, Texas office. This is a temporary, hourly position reporting to the regional Senior Natural Resources Project Manager.

    The selected candidate will perform wetland data collection, acoustic bat surveys, bat mist net surveys, avian surveys, compile and analyze environmental data, perform biological and geological field surveys, and assist with data collection and data entry for a variety of natural resources projects. Position requires excellent field logistic planning experience, experience with birds, bats, and wetlands in multiple regions of the country, technical writing, critical thinking, and organizational skills, as well as the ability to occasionally work long hours. Overnight travel and field work in harsh conditions may sometimes be required.

    What you will accomplish

    Job Responsibilities

    • Assist with surveys and collect field data on sensitive plants, wildlife and habitats, including the use of topographic maps, aerial photographs, GPS units, and other maps and tools to determine exact locations of project areas, habitat types, and associated landforms
    • Collect and document wetland field data according to USACE Wetland Delineation Manual and applicable regional supplements
    • Supervise and participate in T&E bat mist-netting and telemetry studies
    • Complete acoustic bat surveys and data analysis using USFWS-accepted methodologies and software
    • Assist with preparation of environmental compliance documents and reports
    • Drive off-road and safely operate SWCA vehicles. Notify appropriate person if vehicle needs maintenance
    • Coordinate closely with project managers

    Experience and qualifications for success

    Job Qualifications

    • Completed B.A. or B.S. in, Environmental Policy, Natural Resource Management, Environmental Science, Biology, Ecology, Botany, or a related field preferred
    • Knowledge of the Endangered Species Act, Clean Water Act, National Environmental Policy Act, Migratory Bird Treaty Act, and the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act preferred
    • Ability to take initiative, resolve problems, and create improved procedures to assure tasks are completed in the most effective manner
    • Flexibility and willingness to learn company procedures, and ability to try new techniques
    • Ability to work as member of a team and individually to make decisions and complete tasks in a timely manner
    • Ability to conduct fieldwork safely for long hours in inclement weather (including temperature extremes) and environmental conditions. Ability to walk up to 10 miles per day, often in rugged terrain. May have to carry equipment and/or supplies weighing up to 40 pounds
    • Ability to safely operate a 4wd vehicle and/or ATV/UTV on rugged, backcountry roads required
