    For almost four decades, SWCA Environmental Consultants has provided comprehensive environmental planning, regulatory compliance and natural and cultural resource management services to businesses and government clients across the United States. We combine scientific expertise with sound technical skills to provide solutions to a full spectrum of environmental projects.  Headquartered in Phoenix, Arizona, SWCA has 30+ offices and 950 employees throughout the United States to serve clients in numerous business lines, including energy generation, oil and gas, mining, federal land management, transmission, and transportation.  The selected individual may work from any SWCA office location.


    The Executive Leadership Team at SWCA is planning for significant future annual growth. This trajectory requires the addition of a senior-level technology leader who has the ability to work in tandem with SWCA’s leadership team to ensure that the dispersed business units align in supporting future growth, both organic and through acquisition.     The Principal of Technology Solutions is responsible for the company’s technology engagement with operations and clients. Their primary job is to ensure that the company’s technology solutions strategy serves the company’s business strategy and delivers measurable business benefits, working in collaboration with the Principal of Information Technology.  The Principal of Technology Solutions will work with SWCA leadership to grow the company through the use of technological resources, engaging with clients and company thought leaders to achieve desired near-term and long-term goals. The Principal of Technology Solutions will direct employees in Technical Development and GIS/Geospatial departments to attain the company’s strategic goals as established in the company’s strategic plan, while reporting to the CEO.


    The Principal of Technology Solutions will act as a liaison between clients and the organization to gain a comprehensive understanding of the target markets and services so SWCA can deliver the cutting-edge technology required for the organization to be successful.

    What you will accomplish

    • Be a strategic partner with the CEO and senior leadership.
    • Having a leadership voice in the development of SWCA’s strategic plan and executing strategic initiatives related to technology – consider ways for the CEO and key stakeholders to achieve these goals.
    • The Technology Development team and a GIS Director will report into this position.
    • Develop and own an innovative technology agenda for SWCA.
    • Ensure the company has the best technology for our employees and clients; conduct research and case studies on leading edge technologies and make determinations on the probability of implementation.
    • Understand where the biggest technological opportunities and risks are for the organization.
    • Need to have his or her finger on the technological pulse — always aware of new developments and the associated technologies that can be applied to employees and clients.
    • Identify areas where technology can be used to create new or bigger lines of business for the company that align with the overall company strategies.
    • Evaluate product development and data as a service as a growth opportunity for SWCA and our clients.
    • Ensure that the technology is always evolving to anticipate and enable the potential futures of the business and product roadmap.
    • Develop a Big Data strategy (as well as data retention) for SWCA with IT Principal in concert with Operations.
    • Work with the COO and leadership to identify the appropriate field data collection equipment, methodology, training, and processes, as well as utilizing unmanned aerial vehicles and drones.
    • Work with leadership and department heads as an advisor of technologies that may improve their team’s effectiveness and efficiency.
    • Play a leadership role in driving growth, which will include evaluating potential acquisitions and meeting with existing and potential clients.
    • Work with VP Business Development, COO, and CFO on business development in a technical way – thinking about how certain technologies can gain additional profits, and/or reduce costs.
    • Work with Chief People Officer on recruiting, retention, process and people management utilizing technology.
    • Attend and participate in technology-based professional meetings and associations.
    • Be the driving force behind the brand’s technical prowess and insight.

    Experience and qualifications for success

    The ideal candidate will need to have the following skills and experience:

    • 10+ years’ experience in Technology and Consulting fields, including business partnerships, technology development, GIS/spatial information, and client interactions
    • Demonstrated success in driving results through others with strong interpersonal and communication skills
    • Experience helping a business grow at a fast pace through thought leadership and professional acumen
    • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental, Engineering, Business, Technology or related field required. Master’s degree, preferred.
    • Ability to travel up to 30% in first year.
