  • About the opportunity

    SWCA Environmental Consultants is seeking a Biocontrol Science Technician who will work with a USDA Forest Service team based in Hilo, Hawaii, developing insect agents for biological control of invasive plants in forests of Hawaii and other Pacific Islands.  This is a temporary, part-time, hourly position that will report to the project task lead.


    Work Environment:  Work is performed in an office and laboratory settings, including a quarantine where strict adherence to containment protocols is required, and in rain-forest environments where terrain is often uneven, rocky, and covered with thick vegetation, and where there is exposure to extremes of weather and temperature. The employee sometimes may be required to use protective clothing and equipment. Exposure to volcanic fumes is common. 

    What you will accomplish

    Duties include:

    • You will support research on insect agents for biological control of invasive albizia (Falcataria moluccana) in forests of Hawaii and other Pacific islands.
    • Assisting with ecological and genetic assessments of invasive albizia.
    • Processing and identification of specimens of natural enemies of albizia collected from its native range.
    • Maintaining insect colonies and performing biological studies of potential biocontrol agents in quarantine.
    • Routine maintenance and minor repairs in quarantine and plant nursery collecting and propagating native and introduced plants.

    Experience and qualifications for success

    • Baccalaureate or Associate degree with work or volunteer experience in biological sciences research or natural resources management
    • Ability to abide by company and laboratory safety protocols
    • Previous laboratory experience preferred
    • Adept at working with a variety of colleagues, clients, and agency representatives.
