  • About the opportunity

    SWCA Environmental Consultants is seeking a talented Director to join our rapidly expanding California operation, which is a center of excellence for resource-based environmental consulting services. The Director is responsible for providing leadership and management of a multidisciplinary Utility Services program, with a focus on electric transmission clients. Reporting to the Southern California Vice President and as a part of West Region Leadership Team, the successful candidate will provide the strategic direction, financial performance, business and client development, staff management, maintain high-quality scientific and technical quality to the Utility Services program to ensure alignment with SWCA goals and objectives. Candidates located throughout California will be considered; as the role will serve the entire state.  Additionally, the Director will help lead the growth of SWCA’s service lines in their local geographic area.

    What you will accomplish

    • Directly provide and lead others in providing environmental services related to the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA), and other federal and state regulatory statutes, along with the environmental due diligence that utilities require in parallel to these statutes.
    • Work collaboratively with the Vice President, Cultural Resources and Natural Resources Directors and regional office directors to grow our operations throughout California. Through business and client development, aggressively expand the client base and revenue in the areas of environmental resources studies, planning, permitting, and compliance services for utility clients.
    • Manage large environmental consulting, compliance, and planning programs and projects, including multidisciplinary programs for major electric utilities.
    • Be accountable for business development, the financial success of the program, and attainment of sales and productivity goals.
    • Mentor and supervise staff within the Utility Services Program. Ensure professional and technical excellence and quality through project staffing and QA/QC assignments.
    • Assist with internal strategy in alignment with overall regional and corporate growth plans within the environmental services market.
    • Promote a culture of teamwork, engagement, quality service, and client satisfaction.
    • Contribute to the strategic growth of the business both regionally and nationwide.
    • Enhance SWCA’s professional reputation and demonstrate the ability to be creative and innovative with these tasks while representing SWCA in a professional manner.
    • Work closely with key individuals throughout SWCA to promote our business interests in adherence with the company’s mission, vision, and values.

    Experience and qualifications for success

    • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Planning, Environmental Sciences, Biology, Anthropology, or a field related to SWCA’s services is required; Master’s degree or higher is preferred.
    • A minimum of ten (10) years of experience in environmental consulting, including the management of large ($100,000 or more), multidisciplinary programs and projects.
    • A minimum of five (5) years of experience in increasing levels of responsibility in management, including supervising and providing leadership for other professionals.
    • A minimum of five (5) years of experience in environmental resources studies, planning, permitting, or compliance services in California.
    • Demonstrated expertise in the federal, state, and local laws and regulations related to the management of natural or cultural resources and/or environmental planning in the state.
    • Demonstrated business development success and consulting acumen, including substantial established credibility with federal and state reviewing agencies and clients, as well as success in client development and proposal writing.
    • Substantial experience working with major utility clients, with direct management of California electric utility contracts being preferred.
    • Team-orientated attitude with strong leadership and mentoring skills.

    Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
