  • About the opportunity

    SWCA Environmental Consultants is seeking a talented Principal to lead our growing Albuquerque, Durango, and Carlsbad, New Mexico offices.  The successful candidate will provide overall leadership and operations management for these offices.  Duties including leading the strategic direction of the offices, financial performance, business and client development, staff management, scientific and technical quality, and alignment with overall SWCA goals and objectives.


    The selected individual will be an experienced leader in the industry and will have established positive business relationships in the New Mexico, western Colorado, and west Texas markets.  The Principal will report to the Rockies Regional Vice President.

    What you will accomplish

    • Provide strong leadership and build successful teams with-in and across all three offices
    • Be a contributing member of the Rockies management team and help drive the strategy implementation and healthy culture for their offices and the region.
    • Responsible for overall operational performance including leadership, sales, growth, quality and profitability.
    • Promote and enhance SWCA’s reputation in the marketplace.
    • Oversee and participate in business development in the region with the expectation of growing sales and building a diverse, quality client base.
    • Oversee and ensure the quality of all project deliverables and services to clients.
    • Lead the development of strong management and project delivery teams in each of the three offices.
    • Collaborate with management and staff across SWCA and promote a team environment that contributes to OneSWCA.
    • Proven people leadership skills are required including managing a diverse team of professionals
    • Experience mentoring, developing, hiring and retaining key team players.
    • Participate in regional strategic growth and diversification efforts.
    • Promote ownership and drive an employee ownership culture.

    Experience and qualifications for success

    • Master’s degree or above in a field related to the environmental services that SWCA generally provides, including (but not limited to) the disciplines of biology, archaeology, anthropology, planning, environmental regulatory compliance, GIS, hydrology, and other environmental and planning fields; and/or a Master’s degree in Business Administration, with an emphasis on strategic planning and operations management, is strongly preferred. Bachelor’s degree and demonstrated equivalent experience will be considered.
    • Minimum of 10 years’ experience providing environmental consulting services and/or management of professional services operations with increasing responsibility, including leadership of others and management-level accountability for a professional services business unit or program.
    • Outstanding management and leadership skills that reflect an ability to successfully manage and grow these three offices, including the development and successful implementation of business strategies and plans in support of SWCA’s strategic plan, as well as development and management of professional staff.
    • Strategic perspective and solid business acumen in consulting/professional services.
    • Experience overseeing or managing large projects and contracts.
    • Highly developed communication and interpersonal skills.
    • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively across state and regional boundaries with both internal staff and clients.
    • An excellent working understanding of the types of services that SWCA provides and the ability to successfully market SWCA’s services to existing and prospective clients.
    • Commitment to process improvement protocols, quality assurance and quality control.
    • Dedication to scientific integrity and quality work products for all clientele.
    • Ability to oversee proposal and marketing coordination and management of key proposal and marketing efforts.
    • Demonstrated ability and commitment to meet clients’ needs effectively, creatively, and ethically.
    • Commitment to the Mission, Vision, and Values of SWCA.
    • Ability to travel as needed. Travel is estimated to be required up to 20% of the time.
