  • About the opportunity

    The GIS Application Specialist will be a core member of SWCA’s Geographic Information Systems (GIS) program and will be responsible for the development and management of geospatial applications and deliverables. The ideal candidate will be located near our Phoenix, Las Vegas, or Pasadena office. This position will facilitate the requests of our Western Region as SME regarding AGOL web app development, Portal Administration, field data collection, training and documentation generation, and project work required to support our cultural and natural resources and planning program for multiple offices in the region. In addition, this position may include collaboration and support from other SWCA GIS groups. This fast-paced job requires the ability to multitask while maintaining technical precision and working well both on your own and with others.

    What you will accomplish

    • Support GIS program with key process owners on the documentation and remediation of application defects, enhancements and/or projects.
    • Work with other application teams to design and implement useful web and mobile application deliverables
    • Coordinates and serves as liaison between project managers and GIS specialists
    • Troubleshoots, tests, evaluates, analyzes and assists with resolution of problems with GIS software/solutions, act as primary contact.
    • Use Esri ArcGIS Desktop/ArcGIS Pro for editing data, analysis and making maps, including the use of geoprocessing tools, symbolizing features, importing/exporting a wide range of data and file types, and producing report quality and field maps in a reasonable amount of time
    • Data management and support for a variety of handheld GPS units using ArcGIS Mobile, Trimble GPS Analyst/Positions/GPS Correct, ArcPad, Collector, and Survey 123
    • Develop, maintain, & improve Web Maps/Apps for use on ArcGIS Online (AGOL) and/or Portal in conjunction with Collector and Survey 123
    • Assist in the administration of AGOL/Portal development and use
    • Create complex final map products using ArcGIS Desktop/Pro to show data representations such as basic (roads, streams, buildings, etc.), complex (buffers, overlays, merges, viewsheds, spatial joins and relates, etc.), and analytical (raster math, spatial analyses, models, multi-variate statistics, multi-dimensional data arrays, etc.)
    • Work with Excel and/or SQL as a lead on complex data deliverables
    • Help with the test and deployment of an enterprise ArcGIS solution as well as testing upgrades before releasing to the companies GIS team
    • Work with GIS leadership to test and improve company capabilities in GIS
    • Build tools and/or script programs to help in the automation of deliverables and the integration of spatial data with other programmable applications.
    • Create documentation on processes for future use as well a present GIS related subject matter to groups

    Experience and qualifications for success

    • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Geography, Cartography, Archaeology, Biology, Environmental Science or related field with an emphasis in GIS (or GIS certificate). Master’s degree a plus. Equivalent experience and coursework also acceptable.
    • Two (2) to four (4) years of professional GIS work experience, beyond university attendance is preferred.
    • Proficient knowledge and ability to utilize Esri ArcGIS 10.x or ArcGIS Pro 2.x is required.
    • Strong working knowledge of Python, .NET, Java, PHP, HTML, is highly desired.
    • Strong organizational skills related to scheduling time on projects and meeting deadlines while working within an organized file structure protocol.
    • Strong understanding of topological relationships, troubleshooting complex data sets, and applying creative solutions to problems.
    • Prior knowledge and experience with ArcSDE or Enterprise, creating database schemas, domains, ArcGIS Server/web applications, network analysis, and/or application development is also a plus.
    • Strong working knowledge of Esri AGOL, collector, and/or Survey 123 is required.
    • Experience working with database integration involving the use of PostgreSQL, Access, SQL, etc.
    • Demonstrated ability of data transfer, data analysis, data mining, and data inventory using software applications (e.g., Windows Explorer, Excel, Access, and Esri ArcGIS).
    • Demonstrated knowledge of cartography and computer mapping including design principles and understanding map creation procedures in ArcGIS.
    • General understanding of basic statistics, and geometric math computations (e.g., summary, distributions, frequency, min/max, range, angles, distance, slope, degrees, area)
    • Demonstrated experience with GPS technology, field data collection techniques, data integration to a GIS, and troubleshooting of equipment and digital files.
    • Demonstrated ability to apply spatial and 3D analyses, and raster math within ArcGIS while maintaining data integrity.
    • and/or water resources, and prior experience working with federal land agencies such as the USFS, NPS, BLM, BOR, USGS, or other, is desirable.
    • Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
    • Ability to produce presentations, and/or written protocol of methods for reports or within metadata to replicate GIS-related analyses or modeling techniques applied on projects is strongly preferred.
    • Occasional travel to offices within the region to meet with team members or clients.
    • Remote (telecommuting) is an option
