    SWCA Environmental Consultants is seeking an associate-level Biologist position with experience in natural resource management and biological studies for our San Luis Obispo, CA office. We are seeking a candidate who is looking to develop a long-term consulting career that combines high-level technical expertise with commercial acumen and leadership. Responsibilities may include participating in implementing scientific studies, surveys, natural resource planning, environmental monitoring/ inspections, and preparing a wide variety of technical studies and reports. It is anticipated that a moderate level of travel and variable hours will be required for the position. This position is a regular, full-time salaried position. Pay rate will be based on individual qualifications and experience.


    What you will accomplish

    Conduct biological natural resource field surveys collecting observational and spatial data concerning a variety of vegetation, terrestrial and/or avian species. Use topographic maps, aerial photographs, GPS units, and other maps and tools to determine exact locations of project areas, habitat types, and associated landforms. Complete biological survey reports, data entry, impact assessment, and assist in Endangered Species Act, wetland delineations and/or Clean Water Act permitting. Conduct research as appropriate and assist with proposal development.

    Experience and qualifications for success

    • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, Natural Resource Management, or a related life sciences field required
    • Minimum of 4-6 years of experience completing biological surveys, fieldwork, habitat assessments, wetland delineations, and/or construction monitoring; experience in [Region] preferred
    • Knowledge of the fauna and flora of  Central California preferred
    • Knowledge of the threatened or endangered species of the Central Coast and Central Valley preferred
    • Vegetation survey, wildlife surveys, measurement experience, or wetland delineation experience preferred or required
    • Prior experience with GIS software (ArcPad) and Trimble GPS units and ability to use technology for data collection
    • Demonstrated experience in preparing technical documents
    • Ability to travel to a location, walk and conduct fieldwork for long hours, sometimes in inclement weather, rugged terrain, often  at high altitudes, and ability to carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 40 pounds is required
