About the opportunity

SWCA Environmental Consultants is seeking a Renewable Energy Environmental Analyst with experience in environmental and land use permitting, CEQA and NEPA environmental review, and preparing and/or managing environmental technical studies (biological, cultural, wetlands, air quality, etc.) for renewable energy and/or transmission projects. The successful candidate will have a general understanding or enthusiastic interest in renewable energy development including siting due diligence and constraints identification, interconnection and energy basics, land use permitting, land acquisition, and environmental permitting. The candidate will report to our Pasadena office but will have the opportunity to work on projects across California and the West. SWCA supports dispersed working options, and this position could be remote in Southern California.

The ideal candidate will have experience and a deep interest in renewable energy projects and the energy transition. The candidate should also be interested in developing a long-term consulting career that combines high-level technical expertise with an understanding of our client’s needs and market trends. Responsibilities may include managing or contributing to deliverables for our renewable energy client (e.g., Critical Issues Analysis, Phase I Environmental Site Assessments, CEQA and NEPA documents, and technical studies), coordinating environmental resource surveys, managing subconsultants, interfacing and coordinating with internal teams, reviewing technical reports, and project management.

Our Generation business line is expanding and focuses on renewable energy with a diverse range of projects from utility-scale wind and solar, standalone battery storage, emerging technologies such as hydrogen, and offshore wind. The candidate would have exposure to many clients and project types across a range of geographies but would primarily be focused on projects in California and our West Coast Region.

This is a regular, full-time, salaried position. SWCA offers a collaborative work environment, competitive salaries, and a competitive benefits package, including an employee stock ownership retirement plan (ESOP).

What you will accomplish

  • Manage in-house, client, and sub-contractor communication and workflow.
  • Prepare project budgets and proposals.
  • Ability to learn and understand the application of a wide variety state and federal environmental laws and regulations (e.g., CEQA, NEPA, Endangered Species Act, Clean Water Act, National Historic Preservation Act).
  • Research local zoning codes and ordinances and their application to renewable energy projects.
  • Serve as assistant project manager or environmental analyst on a variety of projects.
  • Communicate effectively and provide direction to other team members on project needs.
  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, environmental planning, urban/regional planning, biological science, or closely related field.
  • At least two (2) years of experience in renewable energy development and/or environmental consulting.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Detail oriented.
