About the opportunity

Do you thrive in the pursuit of ensuring excellence in environmental consulting services for your clients? SWCA Environmental Consultants is expanding their team and looking for a dynamic individual who is following their passion in delivering the highest-quality project work. 

 

Your role will be to lead fatality searches at wind energy facilities on Hawaii's Big Island. You should be able to work a varying schedule that offers 20 hours per week.

What you will accomplish

Conduct fatality searches at one or more wind energy generation facilities on the Big Island. Search transects to locate any bat or avian fatatlity on a weekly search schedule. Participate in searcher efficiency trials, and monitor carcassess placed for carcass retention trials. Assist with live trapping of cats and mongooses. Use topographic maps, GPS units, and other maps and tools to determine exact locations of project areas, and carcasses. Operate game cameras to document scavenger activity.



Experience and qualifications for success

  • Hawaii bird_croppedB.A. or B.S. in Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, Natural Resource Management, or a related field is desired, but not required
  • Ability to find and identify bat and bird carcasses
  • Knowledge of fatality survey techniques
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience in related fieldwork required
  • Ability to drive a 4wd vehicle on rugged, backcountry roads
  • Ability to travel to a location, walk and conduct fieldwork for long hours, sometimes in inclement weather, rugged terrain, often at high altitudes, and ability to carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 40 pounds is required
