Do you thrive in the pursuit of ensuring excellence in environmental consulting services for your clients? SWCA Environmental Consultants is expanding their team and looking for dynamic individuals who are following their passion in delivering the highest-quality project work.

 

SWCA Environmental Consultants is seeking an Avian Biologist to support our Austin, Texas office with projects in Oklahoma and potentially other states in the region. This position will be involved in a variety of biological studies, including conducting biological evaluations and assessments in support of Endangered Species Act requirements, baseline studies, and monitoring of project sites. This is a part-time, hourly seasonal position.

 

What you will accomplish

  • Collect and oversee the collection of field data
  • Use topographic maps, aerial photographs, GPS units, and other maps and tools to determine exact locations of project areas, habitat types, and associated landforms
  • Photograph and record appropriate habitat, species, and landforms
  • Prepare and review reports and/or contribute to report sections
  • Operate SWCA vehicles. Ability to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle on rugged, backcountry roads
  • Work both independently and as a member of a team
  • Take initiative, resolve problems, and communicate with team members to ensure tasks are completed in the most effective manner

Experience and qualifications for success

 

  • B.A. or B.S. in Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, Natural Resource Management, or a related field required
  • Minimum of two (2) years of bird survey experience required
  • Ability to correctly identify birds of Texas required
  • Must be able to use GPS units with minimal training
  • Must possess a valid driver's license
  • Ability to conduct fieldwork safely for long hours in inclement weather (including temperature extremes) and environmental conditions. Ability to walk up to 10 miles per day, often in rugged terrain. May have to carry equipment and/or supplies weighing up to 40 pounds
  • General knowledge of the fauna and flora of Texas and Oklahoma
  • Familiarity with ArcGIS, Microsoft Office Word and Excel
