About the opportunity

SWCA is actively seeking an Archaeologist - Field Director, who will also have project management responsibilities, to join our Cultural Resources Program for our Denver office. This is a regular, hourly position; typical work week may exceed 40 hours, depending on workload.   Pay rate will be based on individual qualifications and experience.

What you will accomplish

Responsibilities (but not limited to):


  • Supervising fieldwork (survey, site recording, testing, monitoring, and data recovery) of one or more crews in the field
  • Leadership (problem solving, decision making, team building, and conflict resolution)
  • Professional report and site form preparation, research, and literature reviews
  • Data quality assurance/quality control, organization, and tracking
  • Field GPS data collection using Trimble units
  • Communicating with Project Managers and GIS staff through regular, scheduled field status reports


Experience and qualifications for success


  • A Bachelor’s degree in anthropology or a closely related field (at a minimum); a Master’s degree is preferred
  • Experience in the northern and central Plains, and Rocky Mountains region.
  • Previous field supervisory experience.
  • Qualified or with the experience base to be rapidly brought to the level of qualification to be listed on the Wyoming and Colorado Bureau of Land Management permits or other relevant archaeological permits.
  • Effective communication skills
  • Ability to travel and conduct fieldwork for long hours and extended periods (sometimes in inclement weather, rugged terrain, and at high altitudes) and to carry equipment weighing up to 40 pounds
